The 2023 Winner in Sheep Production is Ava Johnson of the Weyauwega -Fremont FFA. This proficiency is sponsored by Big Sky Suffolks.
Ava’s family started their flock of sheep in 2015, when she was only ten years old. As Ava has grown up alongside the flock, so has her responsibilities. Now, Ava’s main role is in flock management, especially during lambing season. This includes feeding, watering, and assisting with difficult labors. After a ewe has lambed, Ava ensures the health of her sheep, by keeping track of important information, checking for lactation, tagging, castrating, vaccinating, and docking the lamb at the appropriate time. Additionally, through her SAE, Ava has had the opportunity to fulfill her dream to show livestock at the Waupaca County Fair.
Ava’s advisors are Sandra Dykes and Connie Peterson.
We would like to recognize the state finalists in Sheep Production:
Second: Ava Bulin, Plymouth
Third: Joseph Robinson, Mineral Point
Fourth: Cameron Patterson, Mineral Point
Fifth: Anna Robinson, Mineral Point
Johnson will find out this summer if she is selected as one of four national finalists. If selected, Ava will compete at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., in November.
