Jones Named Wisconsin Star Farmer Finalist

June 16, 2022 Star Award

Owen Jones of the Randolph Cambria Friesland FFA is a Wisconsin Star Farmer finalist.

The Star Farmer Award recognizes students in production agriculture working with entrepreneurship programs, ranging from animals to crops.

Owen plants acreage of corn for grain and soybeans, as well as owning a herd of beef cattle. Over time, Owen has expanded to own 120 acres and 17 beef cattle. Owen does all of the work related to selecting seed, tillage, planting, fertilizing, crop scouting, combining, and drying. He has also put in work to learn about corn contracts and improving the prices he got. Owen also does sire selection and veterinary work for his beef herd, and was excited to add seven more calves to his herd this spring.

Owen will attend UW-Platteville to major in Ag Business and Soil and Crop Science, and plans to return to the family farm after graduating.

Owen’s parents are Jill and Greg Jones. His advisors are Mr. Keith Gundlach, Ms. Stephanie DeVries, and Ms. Lauren Frances.
