Nelson Wins Wisconsin FFA Forage Production Proficiency

June 16, 2023 Proficiency

The 2023 Winner in Forage Production is Rhett Nelson of the Waupaca FFA. This proficiency is sponsored by the Wisconsin FFA Foundation Annual Fund.

Rhett has gained an abundance of knowledge on how to produce quality forages on his family’s grass-fed beef operation. On the farm, Rhett’s family uses a pasture rotation system and raises smaller framed cattle, who are more efficient, to achieve better grass genetics and growth. By monitoring grazing, Rhett is able to move his herd at the proper time to allow the plants to be able to grow a stronger root base and have better retention. Additionally,  Rhett works at local farms, Richchardson’s Beef and Brook’s Dairy, where he cuts, rakes, and bales for both farms. Last year, alone, Rhett produced 1,200 bales of hay for his clients to feed to their herds.

Rhett advisor’s are Hannah Whipple and Bobbie Jo Montgomery.

We would like to recognize the state finalists in Forage Production:

Second: Lora Korth, New London

Third: Rylee Nelson, Waupaca

Fourth: Logan Schmidt, Brillion

Fifth: Jackie Nusbaum, Juda

Nelson will find out this summer if he is selected as one of four national finalists. If selected, Rhett will compete at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., in November.
